A Tamil marriage biodata (also called 'biodata' or 'jathagam biodata') gives primacy to astrological detail — particularly the birth star (nakshatra/natchathiram) and its padam — and to community identification. Most Tamil families circulate a biodata and a separate jathagam (horoscope) simultaneously, treating them as a package. The biodata is the social introduction; the jathagam is the technical document for the family astrologer.

The birth star (natchathiram) in Tamil usage is what Vedic astrology calls the janma nakshatra — the Moon's nakshatra at birth. Tamil families also specify the padam (pada, or quarter) within the nakshatra. Certain stars and pada combinations are considered auspicious or inauspicious for specific matching communities, and some are traditionally avoided (e.g., certain muhurtha restrictions). Include star, padam and rashi (moon sign) on the biodata.

Kulam in Tamil usage broadly corresponds to the sub-caste or community group. Gotram (patrilineal rishi lineage, identical in concept to gotra) applies within Tamil Brahmin communities and many non-Brahmin communities as well. Same-gotram marriages are avoided in most communities. Tamil astrological tradition checks seven specific nakshatra-based compatibilities (ezhu poruttam) before a match is declared suitable. Naming the ancestral ur (village) and nattu (region) is a hallmark of Tamil biodatas. For Brahmin families, the ur often identifies the community sub-group. For non-Brahmin families, it places the candidate within a regional network. For Tamil diaspora families (Singapore, Malaysia, USA, UK), the Chennai or native Tamil Nadu district connection is still stated even after multiple generations.

Engineering, medicine and government service have historically dominated Tamil professional profiles, particularly in Tamil Brahmin communities. IT and finance roles are now equally prominent. State educational institution, degree, and current designation and employer accurately. For IIT/NIT/AIIMS graduates, the institution is often listed prominently.

A bilingual Tamil + English biodata is standard for domestic Tamil exchanges, especially in traditional families. Online matrimony profiles are typically English-only.
