Marriage Biodata Format (with Examples)

A marriage biodata is a family's first impression of a candidate. A clean, logical layout signals organisation and seriousness; a cluttered or missing-field document raises doubts before the family has even met. Format is not vanity — it is functional communication.

Every Indian marriage biodata, regardless of community, contains some version of these seven field groups: personal basics (name, DOB, height, complexion); education and career; astrological particulars (birth details, nakshatra, rashi, lagna, manglik, gotra); family details (parents, siblings); personal note; photo; and contact information. The order may vary by community, but all seven are expected.

Even in urban, progressive families, the family astrologer or elder is typically consulted before a formal meeting is arranged. Providing nakshatra, rashi, lagna, gotra and manglik status on the biodata means the astrologer can run a preliminary check without a separate document request. Omitting these fields does not make them irrelevant — it just delays the process.

Gotra identifies patrilineal lineage across most Hindu communities. Marriages within the same gotra are prohibited in most North and Central Indian traditions, and similar rules apply in many South Indian communities under different terminology. Including gotra allows both families to clear this check immediately.

The photo should be a portrait-orientation image on a plain light background. Traditional or smart-casual attire. No group photos, no party pictures, no heavy filters. Many families make a first go/no-go decision based on the photo — a poor-quality image is a self-inflicted disadvantage.

Most biodatas travel as a PDF via WhatsApp. The PDF should be under 2 MB for easy sharing. A shareable kundli link added to the footer means the family astrologer can view the full chart without a further request.

The most common biodata errors: (1) missing birth time — without it, a full kundli cannot be generated; (2) gotra left blank; (3) inconsistent spellings of the candidate's name across documents; (4) exaggerated qualifications that fail verification; (5) unclear photo. Fixing these upfront saves weeks of back-and-forth.

A biodata is a living document. It should be updated after any significant career change, relocation or shift in family circumstances. Circulating a two-year-old biodata with outdated employment details creates awkwardness at the meeting stage. Date-stamp the document so families know they have the current version.
