How the Ishta Devata is found (Jaimini Karakamsa method)

Your Ishta Devata is the deity most natural for your personal worship (upasana) on the path toward moksha. The Jaimini method the calculator uses is precise: find your Atmakaraka (the planet at the highest degree in its sign), place it in the navamsa (D9) to get the Karakamsa, count the 12th sign from the Karakamsa — the house of liberation from the soul's own seat — and read the deity of that sign's lord.

So the chain is Atmakaraka → Karakamsa → 12th-from-Karakamsa → its lord → that graha's devata. The calculator runs this for your chart and shows every step, so the result is reasoned, not asserted.

The graha and its Ishta Devata

Whichever of the seven grahas rules the 12th-from-Karakamsa points to your Ishta Devata by classical association. Lineages differ on the exact deity; this is the commonly used set, and the reasoning above is what matters most.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my ishta devata?

Enter your birth details above. The calculator finds your Atmakaraka, derives the Karakamsa (its navamsa sign), takes the 12th from it, and returns the deity of that sign's lord — with each step shown, by the Jaimini method.

What is the ishta devata by date of birth?

It is derived from the whole chart, not the date alone — it needs your birth time and place to fix the Atmakaraka and the navamsa. Date-only 'ishta devata' tools cannot compute the Karakamsa correctly.

Is the ishta devata the same as my favourite god?

Not necessarily. The Ishta Devata is the deity classical Jaimini analysis points to for your upasana toward liberation; your beloved family deity (kula-devata) or personal favourite may differ, and worshipping both is entirely traditional.

Why do different sites show different ishta devatas?

Because the deity associations vary by lineage, and because the result is sensitive to birth time (the navamsa changes every 3°20′). If two tools agree on your Atmakaraka and Karakamsa but name different deities, that is a lineage difference, not an error.
