How the lagna (ascendant) calculator works
The lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your moment of birth — the fastest-moving point in the chart, changing sign roughly every two hours. Computing it needs all three inputs: date, exact time and place (latitude decides how quickly signs rise at your horizon).
The engine converts your birth instant to local sidereal time, derives the rising degree of the ecliptic, and subtracts the Lahiri ayanamsa for the sidereal lagna. You get the sign, the exact degree, the lagna nakshatra and the lagna lord — the planet whose condition classical jyotish weighs first.
Lagna vs rashi — which one is 'my sign'?
Both, for different jobs. The lagna anchors the houses: health, career, marriage houses are all counted from it, so predictions and yogas read from the lagna. The rashi (moon sign) carries mind and temperament, and daily rashifal is read from it. A complete reading uses the two together — which is exactly what the full kundli does.

What if my birth time is off by 15 minutes?
Usually the lagna survives (each sign rises for ~2 hours), but near a sign boundary even 5 minutes flips it. If your result shows a degree under 2° or over 28°, treat the neighbouring lagna as possible and verify with life events.
What is the lagna lord?
The planet that rules your rising sign — for Mesha lagna it is Mars, for Vrishabha it is Venus, and so on. Its house, dignity and aspects are the first things a jyotishi checks; a strong lagna lord steadies the whole chart.
Can I know my lagna without birth time?
Not reliably — all twelve lagnas occur every day. Your rashi and nakshatra usually survive a missing time; the lagna does not. Some families recover it from a remembered event ('just after sunrise') — even that narrows it to one or two signs.
