Mundan (chudakarana) — the ceremonial first head-shave — is classically performed in the child's 1st or 3rd year (odd years generally), on a day when the Moon rides a light, kind nakshatra: Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Jyeshtha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha or Revati, on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.

Many families hold the mundan at a kula-devata temple or a tirtha; the date list above applies everywhere, and our city panchang pages give the day's choghadiya for the exact hour wherever you hold it.

Each day is screened on the three classical panchang limbs: the Moon's nakshatra must be on the mundan (first haircut) list below, the vara (weekday) must be favourable for the activity, and the tithi must be clear — not rikta (4th, 9th, 14th of either paksha) and not amavasya. Dates clearing all three are shubh; two of three, acceptable.
