About the vidyarambha (first learning) muhurat

Vidyarambha (or akshararambha) — the child's ceremonial first writing — is classically timed to a Moon in a learning-friendly nakshatra (Ashwini, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Shravana, Revati and peers) on the days of Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or the Sun.

Vasant Panchami is the season's famous mass-vidyarambha day, and in Kerala the Vijayadashami vidyarambham fills temples — but the tradition never required waiting: any qualifying date serves. The child traces the first letters (often 'ॐ' or 'हरि श्री') in rice with a grandparent's hand guiding.

How these dates are chosen

Each day is screened on the three classical panchang limbs: the Moon's nakshatra must be on the vidyarambha (first learning) list below, the vara (weekday) must be favourable for the activity, and the tithi must be clear — not rikta (4th, 9th, 14th of either paksha) and not amavasya. Dates clearing all three are shubh; two of three, acceptable.

The honest fine print

This is day-level panchang screening — the same first pass a priest does. It does not fix the hour (lagna/choghadiya), weigh your personal chart, or apply regional month rules. For a ceremony, confirm the final window with your purohit; for a chart-personalised list, use the ₹199 report.

Want the full 90 days, graded, for YOUR chart? — ₹199

The muhurat report adds your personal Tara-bala and Chandra-bala screens on top of the panchang, grades every date, and arrives as a printable PDF.

Frequently asked questions

At what age is vidyarambha done?

Traditionally between the 3rd and 5th year, before formal schooling begins — old texts say when the child can hold intent, not a fixed birthday. Any shubh date above within that age window serves.

Is Vasant Panchami the only day for vidyarambha?

No — Vasant Panchami (Saraswati's day) and Vijayadashami are the beloved communal days, but the classical screens qualify dates all year round; that is exactly what this page computes.

What is written first at vidyarambha?

Regional practice varies: 'ॐ', 'श्री गणेशाय नमः', or in the Kerala tradition 'हरि श्री ग ण प त ये न मः' — traced in a plate of rice with the child's finger, guided by an elder or guru.

When is the next vidyarambha (first learning) muhurat?

The next shubh dates are 20 Aug, 23 Aug, 27 Aug — see the full 90-day table above, which updates continuously.
