About the travel / yatra muhurat

Yatra muhurat governs the START of a meaningful journey — a pilgrimage, a move to a new city, a first visit to the in-laws. The Moon in a light, swift nakshatra (Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Anuradha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Revati) on a travel-friendly weekday is the classical preference.

Daily commutes and routine trips don't need a muhurat — the tradition reserves this for journeys that begin something. For pilgrimage seasons (Char Dham, Sabarimala), the date list above pairs well with our city panchang pages for the destination.

How these dates are chosen

Each day is screened on the three classical panchang limbs: the Moon's nakshatra must be on the travel / yatra list below, the vara (weekday) must be favourable for the activity, and the tithi must be clear — not rikta (4th, 9th, 14th of either paksha) and not amavasya. Dates clearing all three are shubh; two of three, acceptable.

The honest fine print

This is day-level panchang screening — the same first pass a priest does. It does not fix the hour (lagna/choghadiya), weigh your personal chart, or apply regional month rules. For a ceremony, confirm the final window with your purohit; for a chart-personalised list, use the ₹199 report.

Want the full 90 days, graded, for YOUR chart? — ₹199

The muhurat report adds your personal Tara-bala and Chandra-bala screens on top of the panchang, grades every date, and arrives as a printable PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Which nakshatra is good for starting a journey?

The swift and gentle ones — Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Anuradha, Shravana, Dhanishta and Revati. The engine checks the Moon's nakshatra for each date against exactly this list.

Does the direction of travel matter?

Some traditions also observe disha-shool (an inauspicious direction per weekday) — for example, avoid starting eastward on Monday or Saturday. That layer varies by family practice; the dates above screen the panchang limbs that are common to all.

Do I need a muhurat for a flight?

For routine travel, no. For a journey that begins a chapter — moving abroad, a pilgrimage, a bride's first travel to her new home — choosing a shubh date is the traditional courtesy to the occasion.

When is the next travel / yatra muhurat?

The next shubh dates are 20 Aug, 27 Aug, 7 Sept — see the full 90-day table above, which updates continuously.
